An excerpt from Take Five

“Get your feet off the sofa you lazy dog! Where’s my dinner?”
“Hi, mum. Oh, sorry, I must have fallen asleep. What time is it?”
“It’s half past seven and I’m starving.”
Madeline Flowers went into her kitchen and started looking for something to eat. Peter Flowers followed her slowly, still half asleep.“So how did it go then, mum?”“How did what go?” said Mrs Flowers as she attacked a tin of beans with a tin opener.“Your meeting with the committee.”
Mrs Flowers smiled. “Not bad. Your mum is not as stupid as she looks.”
“So what did you tell them?”
“I told them that Bango Burgers is going to give the Waterbridge Wildcats twenty-five thousand pounds a year.”
“Who are the Waterbridge Wildcats?”
“That’s the stupid name they’ve given to the women’s basketball team.”
“So Bango Burgers is going to give the Waterbridge Wildcats twenty-five thousand pounds a year?”
   Mrs Flowers nodded.
   “Er, mum?”
   “Yes, dear Peter?”
“Why are you going to give the Waterbridge Wildcats twenty-five thousand pounds a year?”
“Peter Flowers, where were you when they gave out brains?”
Peter pulled a face at his mother.
“It’s called sponsorship!” said Mrs Flowers as she emptied her tin of baked beans into a saucepan. “The company gives them money. They advertise the company, simple – a bit like you, Peter.”
