Olomouc – Czech Republic

Olomouc is an attractive town in eastern Moravia with a population of just over 100,000, many of them students. It is well worth a day or two to stroll around.

Olomouc
A short distance from the train station you cross the River Morava and already there are signs of the beauty ahead.

This is Horni Namesti (Upper Square), a pleasant car-free area to stroll around.

Olomouc
Beautifully renovated buildings – and still no cars!
Olomouc car park
Oh well, it was too good to last. Even the cute looking tortoise can’t make up for it. What should have been a pleasant stroll around a square, hundreds of years old becomes a stroll around a 21st Century car park.
Olomouc
Czech majorettes. Is it normal to wear fast-food-restaurant hats while majoretting?
Olomouc
A bank, a Chinese restaurant and a grocery. Not the most inspiring shops for a main square.
Olomouc
The famous astronomical clock at the back of the town hall. No saints in this clock – just a few comrades hard at work.

Practical Information
Olomouc is easily reached with direct trains from Prague, Brno and Ostrava. Check out the times at this website.
