| One of the most striking views in the Czech Republic - Hradcany. A hotchpotch of architectural styles but the end effect is amazing. Click on the image to enlarge it. | |||
| Strangely, 90 % of visitors to the Czech Republic only ever visit Prague. True, Prague is beautiful, as this picture shows (taken by my old friend Jennifer Chow) on the Charles Bridge - but there is so much MORE to see... and the prices fall as you move away from the capital... | |||
This beautiful collonade is part of Vysehrad cemetery, a place where many famous Czechs are buried. Look out for the composers Dvorak and Smetana, and the writers Capek and Nemcová.

The astronomical clock in Old Town Square, Prague. This amazing clock was built in 1410 and various parts were added to it until 1945 when it was badly damaged by the Nazis. Completely restored by 1948, the clock draws thousands of tourists every hour to see the 'walk of the apostles' - at the end of which you have an excellent opportunity to learn the phrase 'is that it?' in twenty different languages. The story that the clockmaker had his eyes gouged out so that he couldn't make another clock is, apprarently, not true. For more information, click here.

The crowds around the Astronomical clock with Old Town Square in the background. Towering above the Square is Tynsky Church with its amazing Gothic towers.

Closely Observed Trains is a delightful little book made into an oscar winning film in 1968. |
I Served the King of England was recently made into a disappointing film. The book, as is usually the case, is far superior. |
Ivan Klima is a talented writer, not as well known as Kundera but well worth reading. |
Franz Kafka is perhaps the Czech Republic's best known writer - and in Jeremy's opinion, The Trial is his best work. |
